Fighting human trafficking to end violence against women and children

 It is estimated that, across the globe, 2.4 million people are forced to endure the crime of human trafficking at any one time. They do so in forced labour, in domestic servitude, in sexual exploitation, and in every country and every region of the world. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, estimates that the illegal activity is a global enterprise worth approximately US$32 billion dollars. A forum was held at the United Nations on "Fighting Human Trafficking: Partnership and Innovation to End Violence against Women and Children".
 UN Security Council President for April is a woman

 Susan Rice



 United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice takes over as Security Council President for the month of April. It is tradition for the position to rotate. But she is the only woman on the 15 member council, which means a female President is few and far between. During her press conference to announce the council's program of work for the month, Ambassador Rice joked about being the lone woman.
 Blood donation campaign to save mothers launched in Darfur

 Twenty-five per cent of maternal deaths in Darfur are caused by excessive bleeding due to lack of adequate blood for transfusion. The UN Country team in Darfur, with the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, has launched a blood donation campaign programme for all of Darfur to address this pressing need.
